President’s message… .

Presidents Report

Welcome to Taslink.

One of the items in this issue is information from Physical Disability Australia (PDA) about a consultation forum they are running with us, at our Information and Training Centre on the 28th of July.  This forum will gather comments which will be included in a submission to the Productivity Commission inquiry in to the feasibility of what is sometimes referred to as a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

This type of scheme would provide long-term financial support to people with disabilities to help with the extra costs they have because of their disability, including such things as personal care or having to buy specialised equipment.

The consultation is being undertaken by the productivity Commission on behalf of the Australian Government.

Submissions need to be sent to the Productivity Commission by the 16th of  August. A draft report will be released in February 2011, with a final report released at the end of July 2011.

you can get information about the inquiry by going to the Productivity Commission web site, or call Freecall: 1800 020 083

I encourage you to participate in this inquiry.

If you can’t come to the forum to have your comments included in the submission, you can phone in your comments on 1300 781 786

PDA will have this number available between the 19th of July and the 9th of August 2010.

Tasmanian Amputee Society Inc.

We held our meeting on June 19th by teleconference, at Wise Employment 53 Elizabeth Street Launceston.

It was a little disappointing as we only had 6 members attend this meeting—3 in Launceston, 2 in Devonport and 1 in Hobart.

Some of our members are not very well and couldn’t attend.

There was a guest speaker at our meeting and after all agenda items were completed Mrs. Lyn Johnston from

Devonport spoke to us. Lyn was at our meeting in Launceston. She is a Midwifery Nurse from the Meercroft Hospital in Devonport.

She is also an amputee and a member of TAS Inc.

She spoke about her own journey pre and post amputation.

Following her interesting talk, those present, had the opportunity to ask her questions.

To conclude our time together those in Launceston had lunch together.

Our next meeting is on August 21st, by teleconference, in Launceston at Wise Employment 53 Elizabeth Street.

This will be our AGM followed by a short general meeting.

All amputees and their families are invited to attend these meetings.

For more information contact Margaret on 6344 6542

Consumer Health Forum of Australia

Building consumer capacity and providing consumer input on the development of a quality framework for the Medicare Benefits Schedule

I have recently attended a two day workshop conducted by The Consumers Health Forum of Australia (CHF) on the 25th May related to the Building Consumer Capacity and Providing Consumer Input on the Development of a Quality Framework for the Medicare Benefits Schedule.

Medicare Benefits Schedule MBS is the cornerstone of the Australian health care system. The MBS impacts on consumer access to allied health, general practice and specialist medical services. As a result, consumers have a strong interest in the effective operation of this system. It is important that any changes to the MBS improve access and health outcomes for consumers.

CHF has provided the opportunity to give input into the new Quality Framework to ensure that the impact on consumers of proposed reforms is taken into consideration and that the Quality Framework reflects the experience of the recipients of the MBS service.

Around 30 participants from a wide range of consumers groups and individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences were in attendance, as CHF recognized that the perspectives of health consumers are unique and vital in creating effective health policy, which I am sure that the workshop achieved on its first day of this ongoing project to improve the MBS.

Further forums will be held over the next twelve months in all States, and it is anticipated that the MBS forum will be in Tasmania around August / September, though this is still to be confirmed.

The 26th May was the final day workshop related to the Diagnostic Imagining Project. This looked at quality use of Diagnostic Imagining and covers services such as;

·         X-ray

·         Ultrasound

·         Computed Tomography (CT)

·         Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

·         Nuclear medicine imaging

·         Positron Emission Topography (PET)

Other aspects discussed were safety and quality of the services, equity of access, availability and of course affordability.

The final report from this session will be presented to the Federal Minister within the next two months to finalise the project.

David Gordon

In Memory of the late George Shaw

4th January 1913 –26th March 2010

George Shaw, a long term member of Tasmanians with Disabilities Inc. has been known to many members for a great number of years. It was extremely interesting when attending his funeral to find out more of the history, behind this kind gentle man.

He was born in England in 1913 and spent many years of his younger life working on farms throughout the U.K., although at the start of World War two, George wanted to do his duty by signing up for service. He was refused at that point as they felt he was better placed as an experienced farmer to keep farming as there was a greater need for him to grow produce for the war effort.

Not completely satisfied with just farming he joined the local home guard and held the position of sergeant on one of the local aircraft gunner units.

After the war he brought his wife and family  to Hobart where he worked for a local farming equipment and produce store. He moved to the North of the State and worked around the North-West region, and apparently was a very deft hand at being able to pretty well fix most broken down machinery.

Both George and his wife (dec) who also was a member of TwD retired to the Freemasons Nursing Home at Lindisfarne a number of years ago.

George was extremely dedicated to his wife and family, and highly respected throughout Community Organisations including TwD, and the Tasmanian Amputees Society. He will be greatly missed by all.

Notice to Northern Members

The next lunch for Northern members of TWD will be held on Friday, 9 July at the Centennial Hotel at 12.00 PM.

This is a trial only, to see how it works and so that a member from out of town can attend –weekends being difficult with transport.

However, if members decide that Friday is okay; get together’s will probably be a little more irregular due to commitments of other members.

Otherwise, our lunch gatherings will revert to the usual Saturday, to be advised before the August lunch.

If you would like to attend and haven’t yet done so please let State Office know who will advise the Northern Representatives.

We welcome members, guests and their families and look forward to seeing you at our next lunch.

Merran Thurley Northern Representative.
